Embracing the original architecture of a home can be both a beautiful and challenging request, but it offers the opportunity to highlight and celebrate timeless design. This mid-century home, with its rich history and unique character, had so much to love and build from. One of the main challenges was the small, closed-off kitchen that felt disconnected from the rest of the home. We sought to open up the space, creating a more cohesive flow while carefully preserving the elements that gave the home its distinctive charm.
The iconic rice paper screen, which originally separated the Kitchen from the Dining Room, was retained and thoughtfully integrated into the redesign, serving as a striking design feature that connects the two spaces. Soft green and fir cabinetry were chosen to complement the original yellow terrazzo flooring, blending new materials with vintage ones to create a harmonious aesthetic. The result is a kitchen that not only functions as the heart of the home but also honors the architecture that made this house so special.
